the Jones Family

My nephew carries the Gold Delta SkyMiles credit card from American Express. He lives in Atlanta so this made sense for him to get the credit card years ago. He has since married and has two sons so he needs to earn more miles to fly a family of four to Delta destinations. I advised that his wife apply for her own Delta SkyMiles Credit Card before this offer expires on July 6, 2016.

American Express is offering increased sign-bonuses for three of its co-branded Delta SkyMiles® credit cards. The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card and the  Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card usually come with sign-up bonus of 30,000 to 35,000 miles, so this is a great time to jump on the deal and earn 50,000 miles after you spend $2,000 in the first three months. The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card is for a limited-time offering 60,000 miles after you spend $2,000 in the first three months.

I advised my niece to apply for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express. Here are my top 3 reasons why:

1. 50,000 bonus miles – that’s 66% more miles.

With the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card, my niece will earn 2 miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases and 1 mile everywhere else. Plus, she’ll earn a $50 statement credit after making a Delta purchase in the first three months. Combine that with the 50,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000 in the first three months and she will have started her journey in earning free round-trip flights.

2. Get Zone 1 priority boarding and free checked bags.

Traveling with a family can add up fast so getting free checked bags on Delta flights for her and up to 8 companions traveling on her reservation is a huge savings. She’ll also get Zone 1 priority boarding, which is a godsend when traveling with her toddler. She’ll also save 20% on eligible in-flight purchases that include food and entertainment. As my niece is from Venezuela she’ll enjoy the no foreign transaction fees when visiting her parents. The annual fee is waived the first year and then goes to $95. With a traveling family of four, the free checked bag benefit can make up for the annual fee on her first flight alone.

3. A free round trip flight is easy to redeem.

Booking Award Travel has improved on the Delta SkyMiles site and they have made Award Travel more flexible with more options. You can now redeem miles for One-Way Award Tickets or pay for a flight using a combination of miles and dollars. My niece will probably use the Miles + Cash option when she combines her Delta SkyMiles with her husbands to get all four booked on the same flight.

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express will help you reach Delta Elite Status faster.

If you’re looking to earn Delta Medallion Elite Status, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles credit card will give you 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (which is separate from SkyMiles you use for award flights) along with 60,000 bonus miles once you spend $2,000 in the first 3 months. You get the $100 statement credit when you make a Delta purchase with your card within the 3 months. The annual fee is $195, which I consider hefty for only getting an additional $10,000 bonus miles if you were to apply for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card.

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles card adds a companion certificate when you renew your card each year that lets you bring a companion along for just the cost of taxes and fees on a domestic Delta flight once a year. It’s valid only on the cheapest Delta fares, and you will have to wait a year to get the certificate.

In addition to the sign on bonus, you earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles and 10,000 SkyMiles after you spend $25,000 on the card in a calendar year, plus another 10,000 Medallion and regular SkyMiles when you spend $50,000 on the card in a calendar year.

You can’t use Medallion Qualification miles to book award flights, but they can help you earn Delta Medallion status which allow you early boarding and upgrades. To reach Medallion status you need 25,000 Medallion Qualification Miles from January to December in a given year.

The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is only practical for those living in a Delta hub city. For my family living in Atlanta it should be a top choice. Especially when one of the household members already has the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card that he combine with his wife’s bonus miles and book travel for a family of four.
